In the Army, there is a popular condesending phrase of "Just write your congressman." It is often used, for when soldiers complain about things that aren't gonna change due to tradition or what the higher ups want.
I'm an asshole and was a serious smart-ass when I was young.
So, the first time I heard this after basic I decided to handwrite my Congressman and Senator. My IT dept and base commander took away MySpace (when it was popular) from our permitted websites. They must have felt we were wasting time or something. Broadband/internet slow down should not have been a problem as we had huge satellites that were used for our Internet connection. We were in a remote area in Central America and that was pretty much the only way I (and many others) could contact loved ones.
I could have bought a local phone or internet. But, fuck that noise. I'm cheap as fuck. I didn't ask to be in the middle of nowhere with expensive ways to communicate to love ones. That's money and I'm a poor-ass private and just didn't feel like dealing with that shit.
2 weeks, multiple and serious ass-chewings later, the entire base was allowed access to MySpace again.
No optimism here, just a big fuck you to the powers that be.
