Regarding "screennames" and nom-de-plumes

There have been many comments, not from many people though, just a volume of comments, about the "significance" of using psuedonyms as a handle when one conducts business on line. We are not talking reality here, we are talking web, message boards, etc.

Some folks say in order to gain their attention and respect, your "real name" must be used.

That gains the assumption that "Dick Brubaker" would be a more real name to refer to than say "bobotheclown".

But like John Galt, "Who is Dick Brubaker?"

What is being discussed here is style not substance. You would no more know at first whether Dick Brubaker was a nom de plume, it just makes you think you do, and since we are only talking about appearances its a very weak argument.

Applying reality courtesies on-line is nice if thats what each individual wants to do.

The idea that nom de plumes are to hide behind is true in some regard, but not all.

If it makes you comfortable, and you need to, just ask the posters real name...I noticed for example when the BatEnemyNumberOne recently made his first topside post, he got slammed for his name and his style, despite that his post sparked a very interesting thread. His post was originally ignored while he was being criticized for his handle and his style of posting.

Rick, that's a negative behavior and attitude that needs to be changed.

I've always been "jack" ever since I was born, ever since I can remember, everyone has always called me that without exception, its my real name on my real birth certificate, I have always used it to identify myself, and its always worked for me before.

My last name is my formal name, the name I use like my married name or my tax ID name. I use it when I need to be that legal "person". I'm rarely Jack Venooker to be honest, except when I'm doing my 1040's or cashing my checks.

Otherwise I'm jack, and anyone who tells me they respect me less because I'm simply jack, well, they just don't know jack.

Fair enough Nat, but my post specifically prefaced this by saying NOT in reality. This isnt reality, whatever some folks would like you to think.

And if someone introduced themselves to me as Buck Futter on the street I would say shaking his hand, "Hello Mr Futter. Pleased to meet you." I would not get the anagram immediately in real time. I would assume his real name was Futter, and probably wouldn't get the joke until later. Thats Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) at work there Nat. That is exactly how it works in real time when you have the audio not the visual to depend on. You would not "see" Buck Futter when it was spoken to you, and Buck is a very real name, so the programming would take over at that point.

I'm not sure, but dont all publishing companies have a cute little "nom-de-plume" they use?

Like Jefferson Starship published all their music under "Ice Nine Publishing" you do know what Ice Nine is dontcha?

The Beatles (well the John Lennon/Paul McCartney part anyway) were originally MacLen music, which evolved into Northern Songs, Ltd.

Lets see...Rich Henn is Club 409 Graphics...Douglas Paskiewicz publishes under "A. Silent Comics"...if not ALL then MOST publishing companies have nom-de-plumes. What the heck DOES "DC" mean anyway in DC Comics??

Greg spake:

>>(Short aside - enough nit-picking over user names, ya know? What difference does it really make? Plus obviously, even a 'real name' could be false)>>

That comment of Greg's was the basis for this thread. I found it such a breath of fresh air in the middle of that rather stuffy attitude.

Kelly got the full brunt of that BS frankly, and its a very unfriendly way to introduce anyone to the pleasures of comicon, to which the response ultimately is.. "ok new guy gets a break"....

Who's attitude really sucks here Rick? Mine because I have the guts to call a spade a spade? If anyone's attitude is going to create a "negative" first impression its attitudes like Don Markstein's IMHO.

Its hypocritical Rick, to put folks like Buck and Fanboy and me on notice the minute someone starts to whine "what'll you do about those Gutter Boys" (a term Don COINED by the way) theyre RUINING it for everyone with their foul mouths and their bad manners" yet look how Kelly got walked all over WITHOUT provocation JUST based on his name, during which the opportunity was then taken for Kelly's "slight" to criticise him for posting something that was "so easily available elsewhere". And you have yet to comment on THAT Mr Veitch, other than to weakly say, "well some of us dress for the party"...well SIR here's the party.

Having to justify your screenname to be "listened to" or "respected" on this board is just "web prejudice".

Greg, thanks for your thoughtful post.
