Have you considered not everything labeled "occult" is dark or evil? There's a lot of knowledge out there available to you, should you pursue it.
And you are lucky living today, at a time when it has never been so easy for the middle and working classes to get access to information, thanks to the internet, digital media, etc. Not just on the occult. But other subjects that aren't ordinarily covered in much depth or at all in public schools, like spirituality, religion, philosophy, political theory, and economics, etc.
Personally, I think corruption in government and the ruling classes is nothing new, but if you do pursue a serious study of the occult, and developing your spirituality, the less "special" you are going to find these people to be. That you don't need them to tell you what to think or lead you in every aspect of your life, and that you can take some of that power back.
