Fabricae Vniuersitatis: COMPASS workers
Fabricae VniuersitatisEvery Monday, Margaret Hafner begins work at noon. Most days though, she’s there early. “It’s better than staying at home,” she says. This sort of work ethic is not uncommon among the Compass Family and Community Services employees stationed at YSU. COMPASS has been serving YSU as a contracted janitorial company since 1982 and is responsible for custodial services in Stambaugh Stadium, Beeghly Center and Meshel, Beeghly, Coffelt and Williamson halls, as well as the E.J Salata Complex and the Lincoln and Westinghouse buildings.

COMPASS employs 60 people on campus on rotating shifts under its Center for Workforce Development. The Center aims to maximize employability skills and provide access to community employment for individuals with disabilities and individuals with socio-economic challenges.
“I’m really thankful for the program, that they were able to bring me in, and it’s a really great experience,” said Matthew Nelms, day shift employee. “It’s friendly, everyone helps, it’s a nice atmosphere,” said Kent Jacina, who is also on the day shift.
Each of the employees receives job coaching for the first few weeks, and then work closely with their supervisors on a daily basis. Some will work permanently at YSU; others will build skills and move on. “I’m proud to work with COMPASS and enjoy working with the clients,” said Tracey Dodrill, supervisor. “It’s definitely rewarding and the people are great,” added Kim Coleman, supervisor in Stambaugh Stadium.
