cag you don't need a visa when going to essentially any country on earth from the US besides like russia, china, or some crazy middle eastern country. they stamp your passport for vacation right at the airport (a thereoctical visa)

however he will never get there because it's insane how one criminal offense can preclude you from intl travel. a DUI will on occassion prohibit you from going to canada. a heroin conviction (esp as Aus is a hub to fly to countries who produce opium) is a major red flag on a passport application.

Probation or Felony issues may also cause a passport application to be denied. If you are on probation, owe more than $1500 in child support payments, are wanted on an arrest warrant, are currently summoned to appear in court, are currently in jail, or have serious felony issues, your passport may be denied.
