my knowledge, Jack isn't dangerous, but he can be relentless with

dragging on for an add't two years.

Our most excellent mediator finally asked my ex what was going on,
given the situation and all the evidence of my finances I continually
provided meeting after meeting, and she admitted Jack had told her of
a late-night phone conversation Jack and I had in 1993 (in which Jack
was arguing an insane position on divorce, and I retorted, wise-ass,
with a comment about killing my self-publishing company pre-emptively;
when I indeed had to end self-publishing in the wake of the Capital
City Dist. closing in 1996, Jack related our conversation as "fact").
At this point, with the air now clear of that, my ex and I sorted
everything out in that ONE meeting, after two unnecessary years of
foot-dragging on her part.

I forgave Jack, but didn't forget that it had happened. In the
meanwhile, he was in an insane, relentless flame war online with my
friend Rick Veitch. Rick dealt with it ultimately by ignoring
Jack—it's the only way to make him go away in these situations.

At that point, for my own peace of mind, I kept my distance from Jack,
save for infrequent online contact 1999-2005. He hosted THE KINGDOM
discussion board around 1999 or so, and I hosted THE SWAMP section of
the board. When that crashed, twice, due to fallout from Jack's flame
wars, I called it a day, without acrimony. My life changed in 2002
when I remarried, and again in 2005 when I moved to working with the
Center for Cartoon Studies. I've had almost no contact with Jack since
2005, save ONE visit I made on my own initiative to see him in Stowe
years ago. It was bittersweet: he was so consumed with anger over some
falling out with an ex-employer that the visit only reminded me why I
was keeping my distance. I quietly withdrew after saying goodbye after
that get-together, and haven't heard from Jack since.

The split is final enough that I have had no contact with Jack since
about 2006. Didn't even reach out to him when a mutual friend from our
shared past (Steve Perry, who Jack had a falling out with in the
1980s) was murdered last year; I knew it would only prompt online
trashing of Perry from Jack, reopening decades-old wounds.

I'll keep my distance from this, too.

Loc: Just south of NYC A lot of things that have happened recently on these, and other boards have gotten me to thinking.

I am a survivor or childhood sexual abuse. I was raped by my father repeatedly when I was young, both orally and anally, and was also beaten severely by him, as well as screamed and yelled obscenities and put down's constantly by him on a sometimes daily basis. The rapes would occur when he would lose heavily in gambling. My mother, severely crippled by rheumatoid arthritis, never had a clue to what was happening, as she spent most of my young life in a wheelchair, zonked out on Darvon, or whatever it was they made after that when Darvon didn't work anymore. Simply put, my real life was a fucking hell.

Why I'm still here I believe, is because of comic books.

After a little time with Daddy, I found the world a rather bleak and scary place. There was no one to protect me. Really, I had no one. My older brother was lost in his teen years in the early 60's, and claimed he wasn't aware of it either.

So, I would get lost in my comics, of which I had hundreds. Those of you who have also been abused know how easy it is to "numb out". When I would read my comics it would stop the hurting and make me forget how scared I was. So, I grew up in that world, essentially. Each month, I would spend every spare penny I had, or could beg borrow or steal to get my books. I probably spent 3.50 a month on comics back then, which in 62 for a 7 year old is a LOT.

I have to say, my sense of balance, of truth and justice, of honor and of perspective was kept in place by reading these stories, and living in them. I could escape the real world effortlessly, and these "friends" were always there. The good guys always overcame terrible adversity and won in the end, and the world was safer in there, and safe as a result.

When Jack Kirby died, I felt like my real daddy died, I'll tell you that.

The idea that comics could foster pedophilia is insane, whether pedophiles are associated with them or not.

Trust me on that one.
