I just found out I'm pregnant and went to my doctor. He told me I won't need to go see an OBGYN for "a while"?

So, I posted a thread when I first got my positive test last thursday asking what I needed to do.
When I went to my doctor on Monday, he acted like I shouldn't have come in to see him. He sent a recommendation to an OBGYN for me, but told me they wouldn't want to see me for a while. (background, I'm 18 and I've never even been to an OBGYN before)
A lot of you ladies seem to start going to the OBGYN right away, so I'm confused. What time is normal to go see the OBGYN?
