Built my own which also wasn't hard. I read a few books on growing fungus and with a spray bottle a enclosed patch of dirt and some basic measuring tools I had a decent amount.

No, when I was growing up in Florida shrooms grow wild there assuming there is cows and they're not on meds. So I just reconstructed a florida environment and ecosystem and it worked out just fine.

But I would use one of those methods mine was more for can I do this and two will it work and produce anything

sounds like a solid plan. I'm not that invested in learning about it I'll probably start with a prebuilt kit, if I like it I'll try out one of the step by step guides and go from there.
