If either parent is a US citizen at the time of birth, the child is as well. If neither parent is a US citizen but the child is born in the US (anchor babies), they are still US citizens.

the US is one of the countries in the world that DOES NOT allow a person to be a citizen simply because their parents are

countries in europe on the other hand do allow this, they're huge on repatriating war orphans

the flipside of this is that a child born in the US can be anchor babies providing a reason for parents to claim refugee status or reason for immigration
