in fact i have said on this forum before that if i was president i'd cut military spending by 100 billion a year and in my second term I'd cut a further 50-100 billion a year or more depending on the practical needs of the military. I'd like to get military spending down from 711 billion to 500 billion a year at the end of 8 years. still well above 2002 levels of military spending which were like 330 billion

most of the military budget is spent on research and development and military equipment and ordnance, not on individual soldiers

we could still afford to field the 68,000 soldiers currently in Afghanistan
