for me, new players who turned into good players always seemed to eventually divert into 2 categories:
1. players who took a chess-like approach to the game, relying usually on int-based heroes with a team-based approach to the game: they'd usually pick heroes like nature's prophet, crystal maiden, keeper of light, etc..
2. players who relied on pure reflexes and talent, or seemingly 'rigged' stat/ability increases - they would usually pick strong gankers and agility/strength based heroes, like clinkz, ursa, spirit breaker, meepo, pudge, weaver, faceless void, PA.. also, a few int heroes like invoker or ogre magi
it seems to me that this separation in playerbase is a typical diversion of a group into 2 categories: apollonian and dionysian - those who rely on structure and 'order', vs those who rely on unpredictability, chaos, and 'in the moment' decision-making.
