"The American Psychiatric Association is dropping Asperger's Syndrome from the upcoming edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5) Its symptoms will be included under the umbrella of Autism Spectrum Disorder, which includes everything from severe autism such as children who do not talk or interact, to milder forms of autism. Asperger's disorder is impairment in social interaction and repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior, activities and interests, without significant delay in language or cognitive development. Often the person has high intelligence and vast knowledge on narrow subjects but lacks social skills. DSM-5 comes out in May and will be the first major rewrite in 19 years."

well aspergers in particular is very hard to diagnose and many adults our age who have it have never been diagnosed
but you need to understand with autism is it is in fact a physical difference in the brain
most people are left brained dominated, however autistic people are right brain dominated, I myself am right brain dominated but it does not mean that all people who are right brain dominated are autistic. In the spectrum you can have a whole range, from mentally and physically disabled people all the way up to "high functioning" geniuses. They do tend to fixate but saying that they have vast knowledge in narrow subjects is not entirely correct, there are just some areas where they can can be much more advanced in (for example maths, puzzles) while being behind in areas of social development or language. You have no idea how frustrating that can be for them especially for the genius ones... imagine being a genius but not being able to comminucate with anyone, how frustrating would that be? It has been likened to being thrown into a completely different culture with a language you do not understand and being told... off you go, no-one will understand you but go survive without any help.
Truth is they do not know what causes it, however these days if dianosed early enough therapy that focuses on increasing the intelligences they lack in such as social or language they can grow up to appear no different from anyone else... but pehaps just really good at maths or something...
My God daughter has aspergers, she was diagnose as a toddler as her speech was not developing, however she was extremely advanced for her age in maths in puzzles.... it is really bizarre to see aroom full of autistic children, now normally you put children in a room and they naturally and instantly all play together... in a room full of autistic children it is weird because they do not even interact with each other... they just go off into their own corner and play by themselves and you have to literally pick them up and make them face each other to get them to interact with each other.
It's not a behavioral problem it is a physical difference in the brain and one that is not properly understood by medicine yet.

I assumed it came from the insurance companies, aspie diagnosis are on the rise and considering they'll soon be required to cover anyone and everyone if they eliminate its classification as a disease they won't be required to pay for treatment for people who aren't really sick
