Licking County recorder Bryan A. Long wants homeowners to know that they can obtain a copy of their property's deed, quickly, for about $3 and save more than $50 that a deed service is charging through a mail solicitation.
Long told ThisWeek that letters have been received by some residents in the Johnstown and Pataskala areas,ugg boots sale, claiming that it's difficult to obtain a deed from the county recorder's office. Government Federal Citizen Information Center recommends that property owners should have a copy of their deed.
The letter tells residents they can obtain a certified copy of their deed for $59.50.
"While it is not illegal for this company to collect a fee for obtaining a deed, they are misleading property owners with their letter," Long said. "I hate to see people taken advantage of."
Long said his office has received calls during the last two to three weeks concerning the mail solicitation.
"I've heard of this company before and they usually hit the bigger population counties,ugg boots outlet," he said. "I'm still trying to pinpoint where they hit here.
"I think the mailings have been the western end of the county," Long said. "It seems those on western end of the county work in Columbus and it may be easier to get them to send a check, rather than those who live five minutes from the county (office)."
