I do some stuff in my routine that is usually advised against here, too. I scrunch dry with a normal towel and finger comb my hair after a shower because my hair is incredibly thin and has absolutely no volume if I don't break up my curls. I think that's trial and error, though, to decide what advice to take and what advice not to take.
