on the plus side most of that radioactive material is thorium which can be removed from the coal (at great expense) to fuel liquid fluoride thorium reactors that are almost incalculably better, in every way, than all generation iii reactors (both designed and currently built) and arguably are the best competitor to molten salt designs (although it is unknown at this time whether generation iv designs will improve further)
