upholding the enslavement of brown people even though it wasnt even necessary anymore thanks to the cotton gin was never the right thing and that is all the civil war was about. the only states rights they were concerned about were the states rights to own and transport slaves. they were pissed off that non-slave states weret being forced by the federal government to return escaped slaves to the slave states and they went super paranoid probably because William Yancy and William Henry Gist (the Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck of the 1860s) started their paranoid crazy ranting about how awful things would be under Lincoln and a handful of states fucking seceded before he was even inaugurated lol. even then Lincoln tried to reach compromise with the secessionist states even while tehy laid siege to Fort Sumpter
