Referring to a drug by its brand name is an americanization that resulted from clever advertising and the stupidity of a lot of people. Its very similar to how in some parts of the US, people refer to any kind of soda or carbonated beverage as "coke". Another good example is how we call acetaminophen/paracetamol "Tylenol", even though in every other country in the world they call it "Paracetamol".

We Americans are very stupid and we learn how to think, speak, and act from commercials and movies.
