$17 per hour in the US is considered high paying by some lowlife standards.

a large number of the people here are low lives who have only had those kinds of jobs for whatever reason

depends on where you live though

cost of living in my area is pretty cheap. I could own my own home and car, pay my bills and live pretty comfortably on 17 dollars an hour full time
it wouldn't be a high wage but it's a living wage

exactly. it's all based on cost of living.

teknorat explained to me that he moved back to aus because here in the US, if you don't have a highschool diploma and some diploma or degree or whatever afterward you are stuck doing shit jobs like he had - security guard
while in australia, people working at a gas station get $25/hr and if they live in a shithole (which is 75% of australia if you're not in a city) you can live very well.

The Australian minimum wage at $15.96AUD comes out to $16.84USD per hr.

And which country has the better economy? Yet stupid ass Libertarians and their Trickle Down Reganomics want the US to be even more of a third world shithole by abolishing minimum wage!
having a ridiculously high minimum wage for unskilled laborers only serves to help drive away those jobs to other countries
obviously in the service industry this isnt a big deal, but the increased cost would be passed onto consumers (as it is in Australia where everything is more expensive)
the minimum wage here is low but the average wage is much higher in proportion to the minimum wage. the US minimum wage is not meant to be something you can live comfortably on, it's meant for people who are just starting out in the work force
even today you can go out and get a manufacturing job or w/e with no or little experience and fast track yourself to making 15-20-30 dollars an hour within a few years, so let's not pretend that the minimum wage is like the "standard" that people live off of in the US, it isn't

however, it is very low and I would favor raising it to 10 or 11 dollars because it's not even keeping up with inflation anymore

making 15 to 30 dollars is poverty level, but it depends on what you're used to growing up
