having a ridiculously high minimum wage for unskilled laborers only serves to help drive away those jobs to other countries
obviously in the service industry this isnt a big deal, but the increased cost would be passed onto consumers (as it is in Australia where everything is more expensive)
the minimum wage here is low but the average wage is much higher in proportion to the minimum wage. the US minimum wage is not meant to be something you can live comfortably on, it's meant for people who are just starting out in the work force
even today you can go out and get a manufacturing job or w/e with no or little experience and fast track yourself to making 15-20-30 dollars an hour within a few years, so let's not pretend that the minimum wage is like the "standard" that people live off of in the US, it isn't
however, it is very low and I would favor raising it to 10 or 11 dollars because it's not even keeping up with inflation anymore
