We weren't. We were warned and warned and BANG 80% of the city in ruins. And Wellington is next. Wellington is built on several fault lines and Auckland is on a volcanic field.

    I felt my first earthquake

but it was just a fun one that knocked some plastic garden furniture over

when it stopped I yelled at the ground, "YAY! DO IT AGAIN!"... because it was a fun one, no-one was hurt and it massaged my bum for me too until I stood up because that's what you do in an earthquake, you stand up and make your head the highest point under the roof

I was in once once in Kentucky when I was little. It was a small but scary for me at the time earthquake.
I wasn't scared because to be honest I never thought I'd feel an earthquake in my life living where I live, but once it had rolled through I was standing there and my cat Jazz who had just sat there through the whole thing just kind of looked at me and said, "Meow?", and I said, "I don't know." And then a voice in my head said, "I think you just experienced your first earthquake." And then I thought it was fun for a second and then I stopped and felt bad for thinking it was fun because then I wondered if anyone was hurt at all, and then I started thinking well this could happen again at any time, no-one really knows if or when, it can just happen and probably will again at any moment and we just haven't figured out how to know exactly when or where yet... but then it turned out afterwards that no-one was hurt in that particular earthquake and it was all rather treated like a bit of a joke around here.... and I was amused about it too.

I don't see the funny side of ones that hurt and kill people though.
