it's not supposed to happen with windows xp, and it didn't for me when i transferred a winxp drive to a new box
supposedly it will still happen with windows 7 since that OS actually links itself to your motherboard but apparently it doesn't always happen...

when windows 8 tells you the key has already been used -- does it or does it not give you the option to enter a new key?

did you steal windows 8 or actually buy it? if you bought it call the mcrosoft activation hotline and tell them you had to buy a new motherboard and you want them to make your copy of widows work on the new one
