as the wc3 engine became more and more dated but players in the hundreds of thousands still logged in to play dota 2, devs sought to bring dota 2 to a newer engine.. one of the first of these was heroes of newerth, which is a dota clone with a few slight annoying differences. Then there's LoL which is incredibly simplified, and then there's Dota2 - the game mechanics are the exact same more or less as DotA 1 with a different UI and shit
