He was a sham doctor too who sold quack tonics and elixirs he claimed would cure baldness and alcoholism; he paid for his building by duping creditors and taking loans out under false names; he was also trying to make money by using the bodies for fraudulent life insurance claims, or selling the cadavers to other doctors (there was a shortage of cadavers for medical use at the time)
And in the end he was going to burn the building for the insurance money - the amount of shit the guy was going to try to pull off is almost unbelievable
