Personally I like the 5.56 for range shooting, but if I wanted something dead bigger than a small dog I would go 300 blackout.

In a shotgun I generally go for 00 buck mixed with birdshot, it's pretty effective. That or birdshot with a bit of motor oil drizzled on so it clumps together until impact.
