well, hmm lets see.. for a few years i was reading a lot of philosophy and psychology.. I actually went out and bought books for that one, and opened them and read them too; cool huh?
..Nietzsche, Jung, Schopenhauer, Kant, Descartes, Machiavelli, the classics, Thoreau
Although I tried to stopped reading philosophy as much in favor of learning things that are more practical. You can spend a lifetime studying and writing philosophy, ultimately gaining nothing other than your own 'enlightenment' and whatever that meant to you.
Nowadays, I just use my knowledge of philosophy to name-drop old dead dudes to sound like an intellectual in arguments

I wasn't one of those smarmy wannabe intellectuals though who hold extremely low-level philosophy in too high of regards; like morons who hear about "Cogito Ergo Sum" for the first time and suddenly think they're geniuses who know Latin and have privileged access to some kind of high-brow philosophy; when honestly I think that every 8 year old with a curious mind has thought about Cartesian doubt at one point or another.
I tried to take a crack at the most complex and meaningful philosophy I could find.
By far the most technical philosophy is the philosophy of language and philology; like Chomsky or Derrida.. it'll knock you on your assLast edited by Plug Drugs; 03-29-2013 at 07:59 PM.

or people who have heard of nietzsche and nihilism and don't realise that is just an infantile self defeating version of existentialism and is popular only really with 17 year old boys and not with anyone who has actually studied philosphy widely and deeply, it's like an elementary child's version of existentialism and is handed out so that immature minds have something to relate to but it does not have the depth and capacity to really stretch a person's mind or intellect into places it does not already know.

lol bullshit. Admit it, you took philosophy in like 11th or 12th grade, and the textbook maybe had a quote from beyond good and evil in it. You never read beyond good and evil.
And Nietzsche is one of the most misinterpreted philosophers of all time; even after dissociating him from Nazism, "what he's all about" gets distorted left and right.. Your teachers probably mentioned Nietzsche's concepts of "master & slave morality", maybe the Ubermensch, and then took some false spin on those concepts and taught it as fact.
Walter Kaufmann did an excellent job though for providing as objective of an interpretation on Nietzsche's works as is possible. For anyone wanting to read Nietzsche make sure its a Kaufmann translation or Hollingdale, or google the translator to make sure they're a reputable scholar and not a passerby that took a few years of German and views philosophy like its pop cultureLast edited by Plug Drugs; 03-29-2013 at 08:14 PM.
