stalin wanted a soviet empire as badly as hitler wanted a german empire and it's entirely possible that if there had been no hitler we would have ended up fighting russians in western europe and the middle east eventually instead of krauts and italians

if the cold war had gone another way and the US had gone to war against russia we would have either lost or fought to a stalemate. russia is a fortress of bad terrain bad weather and crazy people.
