every machine I've used trips the thermistor and turns off, even servers. Sleep doesn't make sense, the CPU is still powered in sleep mode.

yeah it's usually pretty easy but every motherboard is different

a lot of times there's a dynamic overclock setting which cranks up the speed when it thinks you need it

yeah that makes sense if it gets hot but not hot enough to trip.

xp had it too but it was called suspend, it writes your ram to the hard drive and shuts off entirely.

it's a setting somewhere, so it goes into hibernate before it get's too hot to fry shit and blue out,you just have to find out the temp at which your shit starts to fry,

I haven't ever had anything overheat, I have hibernate and all that shit turned off, when my computer is on it's on when it's off it's off, haven't had a problem my entire life,,,,
