Meet Christine!
FGA: What was the initial thing that made you want a change?
Christine: There’s so many factors that went into my decision to live a healthy lifestyle. I was a newly wed, keeping my husband awake at night with my snoring, having lower back aches from all the weight, and I was just afraid of the camera and ashamed of my image. I couldn’t wear what I wanted to, I got out of breath all the time. It was terrible! My husband is in the military and he leaves for days at a time, so I needed something to focus on, and what better to focus on than making myself healthier? It was 2 weeks after I began that I decides that I was doing this for myself, and finishing this journey for my country and joining the Air Force when I get to goal.
FGA: What does a typical day (of meals) consist of for you?
Christine: Since I began, I have eaten the same breakfast almost every day: 2 medium eggs cooked with cooking spray, 2 or 3 turkey sausage links or lean turkey lunch meat, 2 pieces of 45 calorie toast with a little bit of “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter-Light”. Lunch varies. Lunch usually varies. I really enjoy having either a salad or a Boca burger on a sandwich thin with baby carrots instead of chips or fries. Dinner is when the chef in me comes out! I love cooking Asian inspired recipes or my favorite personal recipe called “Naked Chicken Fajitas with brown rice.” My choice in what and how to cook have changed so dinner is always cooked with olive oil, and if I have rice, I portion it.
FGA: What is a sample workout routine you do weekly?
Christine: I always start out with running. I always do a minimum of one mile on the track, and more if I’ve got the time! Afterwards, I begin weight training. I do either legs or arms and abs. On leg day, it’s the Smith Machine, leg presses, calf raises, leg extensions. I do 3 sets of 15 of each. On arms and abs I start out with dumbbell curls, chest press, and for abs I do sit ups, medicine ball V’s, and crunches with the medicine ball in front. If I am feeling beastmode, I’ll run another mile!!
FGA: What was the most challenging thing on this journey and how did you overcome it?
Christine: The most difficult thing for me was learning to say NO and sticking to it, especially when it comes to alcohol. I was always the party girl and I couldn’t give in this time. My recruiter asked me to quit since alcohol is empty calories and carbs and I’ve kept my word to her and to myself!
