californias agricultural industry was traditionally harvested by seasonal workers who would go back and forth across the country from season to season, as well as blacks. it put those people out of work. now you've got the seasonal workers doing heroin in the streets of san francisco and the blacks slowly migrating north
those people are out of work because they're legal citizens who have the leverage to demand minimum wage and if the growers were forced to pay minimum wage (drumroll please) the price of produce would triple.
nobody talks about the slave class that illegal immigration provides, some people even pretend they want to end it (though never for the right reasons), but we all benefit from it and we'd all be equally fucked without it. we could have sealed off the mexican border decades ago if anyone actually wanted to, they didn't then and they don't now. trump "doing something" about it is all a big show.
i assure you that agricultural workers are making more than minimum wage, both legal and illegal. a lot of what would rise would be cheap clothes. if your $7 shirt was made in america, it was made by a spic looking over their shoulder for la migra
to give you some background from my life, most of the illegal immigrants ive known or worked with were paid similar wages. min wage in texas was probably $5.15/hr when these were going on.
ag workers usually made around $10/hr
construction/framing/roofing guys usually made $14-16/hr
cooks typically made minimum wage, "chef's" made $10/hr.
the idea that they dont get paid a similar wage is bullshit. where the employer saves money is insurance, taxes, 401k, health benefits, and not having to pay into various funds like unemployment

thats how legals are paid too. agriculture has some fucked up laws and in many cases there is no federal minimum wage of overtime for agricultural workers. someone might be working 12 hours a day and making 10k per year, but theyre only working that job for 3-4 monthsQuote:
