you shouldn;t overclock it at all. you can ask them to set it or you can do it yourself if you're comfortable futzing around in the bios

It won't overheat when it's sitting idle, it'll overheat when you start playing a game and taxing it a bit. then it'll bluescreen or shut itself off and refuse to turn back on until it cools off

your mother board should actually go into sleep mode when it get's too hot,

as all modern computers have this built in

pretty sure you can even set the temp at which it goes into sleep

Intel spend millions designing this chip to run at a specific speed, all their stability testing is based around 3.5Ghz. It will *probably* erun faster, but you might hit on some defect that will make it crash since it was never tested at 4.5Ghz. It's also designed to reach a certain temperature at the native clock speed, if it runs faster it's going to get hotter and heat destroys components. The people building the machine probably put in a bigger fan/heatsink to compensate, but how long until it's crudded up and you're having issues?

Also honestly you're never even going to notice the difference, actual speed is about more than clock speed these days (the number of Ghz) so why bother risking it

every machine I've used trips the thermistor and turns off, even servers. Sleep doesn't make sense, the CPU is still powered in sleep mode.

windows 7 has hibernate mode, which is basically off,and not the same as sleep, shitty laptops do this even, every computer from the last 5 years does this, ruby's blue screens are from his autism turning to a computer virus,

yeah it's usually pretty easy but every motherboard is different

a lot of times there's a dynamic overclock setting which cranks up the speed when it thinks you need it

I can update my bios and overclock my processor from within windows all with one click DON'T TAKE MY ADVICE THOUGH

xp had it too but it was called suspend, it writes your ram to the hard drive and shuts off entirely.
