Nicknamed the “Gaylies”, this is the fourth year that the list has been announced and includes young comedians Josh Thomas and Tom Ballard, politicians Bob Brown and Penny Wong, media personality Ruby Rose, theatre producer John Frost and more.
Known as the Same Same 25 presented by Absolut, the awards are given to the 25 Australians judged to be the most influential over the past 12 months by members of Australia’s #1 gay and lesbian lifestyle website SameSame.com.au. Publicly nominated, and then selected by a panel of community leaders, this is the first year that the announcement event for the national awards has been held in Melbourne.
“I am always delighted when the full list comes together as it brings a new array of people out into the spotlight,” says SameSame.com.au founder Tim Duggan. “This year in particular is a young and fresh list with people like Ali Hogg, Alex Greenwich, Tim, Tim's Boyfriend Keith, Tommy Murphy and more all 30 years or younger. It really feels like they are new generation of role models coming through and I think that’s reflective of a generation that is comfortable being who they are from a young age.”
The announcement was made at Penthouses of the award-winning Cullen Hotel in Melbourne, a member of the Art Series group of hotels and attended by many of the 25.
“Every single member of the list have done admirable things in their chosen profession or passion that makes them influential,” says Tim Duggan. “It’s inspiring so see and hear all of their stories, and heartening to see the influence that gay and lesbian people have in all aspects of Australian life.”
“Of the 100 people that have been on the list over the past 4 years, there have only been 2 people that have been on the list every year – Michael Kirby and Bob Brown. That’s a real testament to the long-standing influence that both those people have,” says Duggan.
The criteria for nomination in the Same Same 25 is that the nominated person must be an Australian citizen who has publicly acknowledged that they are gay, lesbian or transgender. They could be someone in the public eye, or a behind-the-scenes worker who is highly respected in their chosen profession.
This year, you are invited to vote for the member of the Same Same 25 that they feel has the most influence and they will be awarded the Absolut People’s Choice.
