2.26 million Americans are imprisoned (this number has quadrupled since 1980) and a total of 7.2 million are under correctional supervision. Only 7.9% of prisoners were incarcerated for a 'violent crime'; most inmates were incarcerated for petty drug charges.
Even though the percentage of the population being put in prison is growing exponentially, the rate of 'violent crime' has actually been steadily decreasing since the 1990s.
