i think you'd be surprised at just how large of a role religion has played in our collective consciousness and unconsciousness -- especially in early civilization.

It may seem like we don't 'need' it anymore, but traditional Judeo-Christian values form an underlying backbone for our whole society and culture. If you don't like christian values, take a look at the other parts of the world that aren't predominantly christian and see how well their values are treating them
