yeah but their communicators sucked ass and look at how crappy the interface was on them; We have "communicators" now that are way more advanced, and Star Trek is supposed to take place still yet in the future with alien technology that's been advancing for even longer. The technology just isn't consistent with itself in Star Trek, takes me out of the show.
