a mouse offers precision and that, from a technical standpoint, means a mouse-based OS is less simple

it's not, though, because almost everything (except, hilariously enough, the two thins you tried to use as examples) takes extra steps or is hidden somewhere and it's not obvious how to find it. Windows 8 is going to force users to search around poking at corners or endlessly googling "where the fuck did they move that?". It's not going to lead to a new wave of casual-ass braindead know-nothing users, the only change will be that the existing ones are slightly more frustrated. The casual-ass braindead know-nothing users started showing up in 1995, and we call them "you".

i agree with fanfare, they tried to simplify things but failed.
But the reason I even care is because if touch GUIs are dominant in the future, it will result in a dumbing down of your average computer user.

windows is what we've got; if Apple was dominant, it would lead to a dumbing down of users
    so either way:
    - if windows dies from this, we lose
    - if windows wins from this, we lose

Windows 8 is bad for the computer world all around

whoa, i made this thread. i didnt even realize that. i made it before even giving it a go in a VM, which i did last night just to see. after experiencing a slew of 0x0000000A errors (i had to enable some memory related bullshit in my host CPU's bios to get win8.1 to work in a guest virtual machine, sigh) i finally got it to 'work' and i was going to make a video review but i got so depressed just looking at it i didnt bother.

i think the point at which i felt genuine human sympathy for the downfall of microsoft, the bordering of meaningless of life, and the crumbling of our society as a whole is when i opened up 'personalize' from right clicking in the desktop and noticed that windows 8 has a few default wallpapers for you to choose from, 6 pictures in the category "flowers"...i dont know why it just made me feel terrible. and then like, is microsoft not a multi BILLION dollar company? do they really not have a single fucking relevant up to speed contemporary graphic designer to produce a handful of wallpapers that aren't straight out of 2002? its a joke like nothing else, its no reason why when they try to sell win 8.1 all they do is show people like dragging the gigangic metro tiles back and forth like 'wow look how SNAPPY it is, wow' as if the experience of you opening a program, oh im sorry, "APP" somehow is an event worthy of being some sort of enjoyable game in and of itself.
