Narcissistic Personality Disorder is often misinterpreted as gender non–conformity. A male narcissist is constantly attuned to himself relative to others. This is often initially mistaken for empathy of others. A male narcissist tends to be far more argumentative than most men. Unlike women who argue over fairness or men who argue over authority, male narcissists will argue solely for the sake of self—promotion. This difference is often not immediately noticed thus assumed to be more "verbal" than most women even. A male narcissist is extremely attuned to his own emotional needs even though they come at the expense of others. This often initially mistaken for the feminine trait of being emotionally self–aware.

The UC — Santa Barbara shooter, Elliot Rodger is an extreme example of NPD in males being mistaken as gender non–conforming and often, homosexuality of a male with NPD. THe difference between Elliot Rodger and Steve Yelle is that Steve actually thinks he is gay and possibly transgender when it is quite obvious that he is nothing more than a morbidly obese, heterosexual, cisgender, male who failed in life due to his NPD unlike Elliot Rodger who thought he was an "alpha–male" who should be able to have any woman he wanted despite sounding more queer than a three dollar bill in his last video before killing himself.

NPD also appears to be gender non–conforming in females as well but that is a separate and so far, irrelevant post.
