Abe Lincoln only made slavery illegal because he wanted an indirect way to provoke a war with the south.
The south had long since been planning to abandon national government and leave governmental power up to the states - this would have meant that Washington DC would have been in control of fuck all.
So, since the south's economy relied heavily on slavery, Abe knew that making it illegal would start the Civil War early and prevent the south from building up enough power to successfully secede from the union.

The fear of abolition wasn't something that could have been realized for a hundred years without the Civil War. Slavery had already become economically inviable in the upper South and had transitioned to the deep South. Under the Wilmot Proviso, slavery could only spread West to territories below the 36 30 degree of latitude and eventually the North would have even more dominion over the South's economic interests.

I think this is wrong; the union knew that the development of California and Texas would eventually lead to more southern control than northern control, and allow the south to successfully secede from the union.
Basically, the union risked letting the entire pioneer west becoming its own country, as well as the south, and that's why it had to start the civil war in order to create a solution before the problem even began

Lincoln didn't make slavery illegal precipitating the Civil War. He emancipated slaves in rebellious states for political and tactical reasons, 2 years after the Civil War started.

California was never a slave state. The North made hardships for the Southern economy, such as the Tariff of 1828. It was a division between North and South, the West was largely relevant for future expansion and growth of both along the 36 30 latitude. The Civil War was not "started" in their contemporary era. It was "started" with the Constitution in 1787. It almost erupted in the 1830's with the Nullification Crisis.

Lincoln put the starting of the war in the hands of the South. He chose not to evacuate Ft. Sumter and is equally responsible. He refused to recognize the South as an independent nation and treated them as rebels, not members of a foreign country. The idea that the United States is a country that was created in a revolution for independence and then goes on to deny portions of its own people from taking the same course of action to gain their own independence is extremely hypocritical.
