give me a DOS manual and a dictionary and I can do anything you can do in DOS; granted it will take me some more time, because you've just used DOS more and are more experienced with it, but I would still be able to catch up

you're right, if they changed every single dos command I'd have to relearn it, that's a very astute observation
by the way, they did do that and I did learn it

good for you; does that make it a good thing to dumb down the user interface of windows to an even lower tier of simplification, such that trying to do any sort of file management on your computer is just tedious or even impossible?
I can cut a file from my downloads folder and paste it into one of my music, movies, videos, or pictures folders faster than you could type out the command for doing that on command prompt..
And I could DEFINITELY do it faster than someone on Windows 8 could, who would have to fumble around with applications that take up the entire screen first before getting to where they'd need to go

I'm betting that despite how minor the changes are you'd be completely lost in windows 8 and that's why it bugs you so much
also I'd love to see you navigate around explorer faster than I can type 'move filename %USERPROFILE%\documents"Last edited by maks; 07-02-2013 at 11:20 AM.

how about move all files of a particular type
move *.txt %USERPROFILE%\documents
What's that? I'm done and you're still fumbling around with ctrl+click? who would have thought

it makes things like file management more time consuming, and ultimately that discourages people from ever learning anything about their computer, as they're only going to learn what's convenient.
And that doesn't imply that Windows 8 is more convenient; it just means that what little convenience it does provide is only convenient to an extent. Anyone who spends a lot of time on their computer is going to end up wasting time due to efficiency reasons on windows 8 compared to windows 7, assuming they don't change the interface from default

keep ctrl+clicking, I'm going to go do the same thing in *nix and still finish before you've had a chance to hit ctrl-x
mv *.txt ~\Documents

You mean like how you never learned any DOS commands, right? Because it's more convenient to let trhe pretty pictures hold your hand and stroke your hair

We want a world filled with intelligent people; we don't want a mass population of mongoloids who throw fits when things don't work for them

under optimum optimum conditions for both of us, i can move both window panes for the download folder and the destination folder almost on top of each other, and i can click and ctrl+x ctrl+v pretty fast, its going to be faster than you typing out the command even if you already know the name of the file you're moving

I can do things in DOS if I have to, ask your average Windows 8 user if they can do anything in DOS
It actually implies that explorer in windows 8 is identical to the one in windows 7 and you've never even seen the OS you're criticizing

but if you can agree that making those pictures bigger is going to leave the user dumber, and you can agree that we want a population of people who know what they're doing, then you couldn't possibly approve of the windows 8 interface, lest you tolerate dissonance in your brain

They can google it just as well as you can. Looking shit up != knowing how to use it
Windows 8 forces you to use the metro interface for various things
I don't agree with that, I think it's one of the stupidest things I've ever heard and that's why I've spent the last 10 posts ripping on you for saying it

also, there are many examples of tasks where a GUI has a DOS-user beat in terms of speed and efficiency;
for example, if i wanted to move 3 files that were next to each other in a folder, WITHOUT moving any others, i could click and drag to select, cut and paste them.
You wouldn't be able to do this in DOS.

if only yall could see each others point of view a little more and agree that both a gui and a command line each have their strengths and weaknesses, you can conclude a fair way to work is to use both.
i skimmed through this thread a little bit and i think maybe the complaint plug drugs against windows 8 has isnt as hypocritical as maks makes it out to be, on the basis that plugs drugs uses the windows gui so he's already using dumbed down software, etc.
i can think of changes to my present windows experience that i would have welcomed, but didn't happen. eventually if you simplify something enough the computer will just turn right back into a television, where there's no creating, only consuming (think about how in particular bill gates trys to reaffirm that users 'like to create, and they like to consume').. maybe plug drugs doesnt like the element of oversimplification or the idea of 'dumbing down' which is a fair point, idk my laptop battery has like 1% i gotta hit submit early or itll all be lost ahhhh
